Salvador at a glance |
If Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s face then Salvador is Brazil’s heart. it was the first brazilian capital from 1549 to 1763 which left to Salvador a leading status that still cannot be rivaled by anyother city in Brazil, as it is the country’s cradle for history, culture, music, traditions and new trends. the imprinting of the afro-brazilian heritage is alive everywhere, with the rituals of the candomble religion, the beautiful harmony of the capoeira dance-fight, the wonderful long tropical beaches all along the city extention and the very laid back and relaxed way of life of the baianos. when you arrive here you start to feel something in the air that makes you want move to the rhythm of Bahia. that’s why many foreigners that came to Salvador fell in love with this mystic place and decided to move here opening local businesses as an excuse to stay. |
In a land so much blessed by God there are countless options to have a great time, we are locals so these are our suggestions of the best things to see and do while you are here: |
| Salvador Carnival |
Rio Carnival might be most famous outside Brazil but the Salvador Carnival is without any doubt the world’s biggest party, gathering more than two million people and 200 plus groups (including many famous brazilian artists) parading in the streets for one week during which anyother activity stops including public offices and banks being closed so everybody can take part of the most anticipated event in brazilian culture where anything happens! |
the 2009 Salvador Carnival will start on thursday february 19 and end on tuesday 24, if you plan to attend it please contact us at least one month in advance to get our best deals. |
| Salvador's Beaches |
Salvador lays on 90 km/56 miles of tropical coastline which means that from north to south the whole city is a succession of great beaches populated by some of the world’s hottest “bum bums”, these are our favourite praias: |
the popular Barra beach, with its calm waters is ideal for relax and get lazy under the sun like a baian. also since it is located in the tourist area of Barra there are plenty of great restaurants and bars where to hang around. in the quiet Jardim do Alah beach you can enjoy a typical Bahia day in the sun among the big palms and the breezy wind coming from ocean. Itapoã beach is one of the favourites by the baian youth because of the many leisure complexes located there and is also famous for its natural pools. Piatã beach and Flamengo beach are very animated too and there you can easily meet many gorgeous locals. |
by contrast on the north side there is the very quiet and never crowded beach of the high society district of Vilas do Atlantico, with its very nice villas located in front of the sea and immersed among the palms. |
| Salvador Sightseeing Tours |
Salvador is one of the best cities on earth as it is filled up with countless places worth to be visited, we suggest you these ones: |
the Barra district with its wonderful and very animated sea side is one of the best areas of Salvador, as it contains historical monuments and entertaining complexes. the Farol da Barra is one of the city icons since it was the first lighthouse built in the Americas and also the first fortress erected in Brazil dating back to 1698. other great places in the bairro are the church of Santo Antonio da Barra located on top of a hill and the Morro do Cristo (which means Christ Hill, because of the statue of Christ on top of it) from where you can enjoy an amazing panorama of Barra, especially at sunset sitting between the palms. |
the Historical Centre of Pelourinho (situated in the Upper Town) is the most important brazilian site of the colonial period, with its charateristic beautiful multicolored houses and the many churches (it is said that there are about 365 in Salvador, one for each day of the year, which explains why the city is called Roma Negra, Black Rome, a nickname that derives from the fact that outside Africa Salvador has the world’s highest percentage of black population). after a walk through the Terreiro de Jesus square (where if you want you can get your hair brained very cheap) you can visit the Rio Branco Palace , the churches of São Francisco (the most elaborate expression of the portuguese baroque in Brazil), of Nossa Senhora do Rosario dos Pretos (that was built for themselves by the slaves who also offered a black Virgin), the Ordem Terceira do Carmo (with the beautiful wood statue of Cristo Morto, the Dead Christ) and the Convento do Carmo. and don’t forget to get your Lembrança do Nosso Senhor do Bonfim ribbon tied three times on your wrist to turn your three wishes come true if you will keep it until it will fall by itself. in the Largo do Pelourinho square (regarded by most baianos as the very soul of their city) was shot most of the famous brazilian movie “Doña Flor and Her Two Husbands”. |
the Lower Town (Salvador is built on two levels) that lies in front of the sea can be reached with the Lacerda Elevator (one of the city’s symbols, built in 1873 and renewed several times, and that connects the two levels of Salvador with a jump of 72 metres/236 feet), or with the Plano Inclinado Gonçalves, that dates back to 1889. once there you can visit the picturesque Port (from which leaves the ferryboats for the nearby islands) and the Solar do Unhão , a former farm now turned into a cultural centre that also hosts the Modern Art Museum and a fine restaurant. the complex is situated in front of the sea and from which it can be admired the most beautiful sunset on the Bahia de Todos os Santos. |
another tour of the Lower Town can consist in visiting the landmark Nosso Senhor do Bonfim church (the most important of Salvador that also gives the name to the major religious celebration of Bahia), that becomes the center of attention in january, when almost every baian comes to wash its stairs. a room of the temple is filled with thousand ex-votos left by believers whose prayers have been answered. another place worth to be visited is the nearby Monte Serrat Fort. in front of Fonte Nova stadium is located the Dique do Tororò Lagoon on whose waters floates the statues of the Orixás, Gods of the Candomblé religion, each one associatead to a natural element and that influences so many aspects of the everyday life in Bahia. |
| the Itapoã lighthouse is another of the most famous postcards of Salvador, and was sung a lot by popular brazilian artists such as Vinícius de Moraes and Dorival Caymmi. close to that is located the enchanting Abaeté Lagoon, a mystic place populated by many fascinating legends, ideal to spend a day out thank to its numerous leisure options. |
| Salvador’s Best Restaurants |
Being Bahia both a tropical and coastal region it has a cuisine based on seafood making free use of coconut milk and palm oil to flavor its dishes, therefore you can't go wrong ordering any type of ensopado or moqueca, two types of stew featuring fish or crustaceans that are the bread and butter of the baian diet. Salvador offers many fine restaurants where you can try both the local and international best cousine, we have selected the following for you: |
if you want to try the typical all-you-can-eat brazilian buffet for a very cheap price we recommend you the Brasil Legal restaurant in Barra located close to the Farol da Barra. the open air Barra Vento restaurant also locared on the Barra walkway near the Morro do Cristo, offers a very beautiful location for a nice lunch or dinner while the ocean’s breeze caress you. |
when visiting Pelourinho we suggest you to lunch at the Senac restaurant, where you can enjoy many delicatessens of the baian cousine in a fine ambient, and during your nights out in “Pelo” the best place where you can finely dine in a refined ambient is the Lemanja restaurant. your best option for sea food is instead the Yemanja restaurant, located near the Jardim do Alah beach. |
churrascaria Boi Preto in the bairro of Jardim Armação is the best place in town to eat the typical brazilian churrasco, the endless rounds of all types of delicious grilled meat that will be served until you surrender and say stop. with the exception of salt the meats are all cooked with no spices or sauces because the chef wants to show that the quality and flavour of each meat doesn’t need to be camouflaged. |
if instead you want to try the brazilian pizza (much different from the traditional you are used to and served in an endless rotation of all types just like churrasco) and the delicious local crepes we suggest you pizzaria Coco Bahia located in the high class area of Pituba. the ambient is very cool due to its jungle feeling decoration. another option for crepes is Mariposa, a cozy and decored street corner house with outdoor tables in the Jardim Apipema district, ideal for meeting new people, hanging out or start off your baian night. |
the best and most traditional ice-cream bar where to try a big choice of different flavours is the Sorveteria da Ribeira, located in the Riberia district. |
if you want to get the complete package in the Solar do Unhão restaurant you can be treated with a fine seafood dinner accompanied by an african-roots show of capoeira (the harmonic martial art masked into a dance that was invented by the first african slaves to get ready for rebellion), candomble and samba de roda. |
| Salvador’s Bar Scene |
Brazil’s national drink is undoubtely beer which is consumed anywhere and at any time of the day, helping people to socialize (not that baianos really need any help to make new friends!) and have a great time, so if you want to try the local brands of beer or just hang around we suggest you these cool barzinhos: |
Salvador’s premiere nightime option are the many kiosks located on the Riberia beach where there is always a party going on. another popular choice are the open air bars on the Rio Vermelho square, where you can spend a pleasant night even on a low budget. the Boteco do França is located on a nearby alley, while instead the Pos-Tudo is an upstairs bar ideal if you like a more relaxed athmosphere with a little live music in the background. |
Emporio are 5 sit-down bars located next to each other in the bairro of Imbui that offers live music and a dance floor, and also the chance to meet many local singles. instead Jangada is a beach-style kiosk located on the popular Itapoã beach where you can listen to live pagode every night. characterized by a shanky town like architecture the Pimentinha is a bizarrely decored two floor bar situated in Boca do Rio, the best ambient is on the upper deck, even if the floor shakes at each step which makes this place even more real. |
a refined architecture, a chilled indoor area, a large tabled balcony with a great view of the Barra panorama and one of Salvador’s best cousines that attracts the top clientele sets the Pereira lounge bar apart. located in the high class district of Pituba To Nem Ai is one of the best happy hours of Salvador thanks to its outdoor tables, great food, always the right people and an airy and cozy environement. |
if you’re homesick for your traditional home pub and want to take a night off the local bars circuit then you can go to Salvador Pub in Rio Vermelho, an english-style pub where you can listen to a cool live gig of lounge and jazz music every thursday or arrocha (a popular music/dance style that originated in the interior of Bahia) anyother day of the week. |
| Salvador’s Traditional Music |
Bahia is the land where all brazilian most popular music was born so Salvador is filled up with hundreds different places where to listen and dance to any rhythm of Brazil, we recommend you these: |
Pelourinho is animated almost every night by the Terça do Benção, an irresistible whirl of music, colors, sounds and sensations taking place on almost every street. free live gigs of samba, chorinho and other baian popular music are held regularly in the Terreiro de Jesus square, Largo do Pelourinho and Praça Tereza Batista square. |
in the Beco de Gal located near Ondina, you can enjoy an intriguing show of samba and pagode (an improvised slower samba with dirty lyrics made by beating anything that can be found on a bar table: spoon on a glass or bottle, chair as a drum, matchbox as maracas, etc), while instead the city’s temple of forrò, samba and pagode is the Tropicana, a big show house with a dancefloor located in Jardim Armação. |
the Casa da Mãe (Mother's House, the mother being Yemanja, Goddess of the Sea) is located across the street of Rio Vermelho beach, where each february 2 Yemanja offerings are taken out to be left floating on the sea. it is a cultural space/restaurant/bar devoted to music, where every night you can plunge into samba, chorinho and pagode. |
located in the Jardim Brasil district, the Bohemia Bar is a perfect post-beach hang out, where you can enjoy a live gig of samba e axé (a kind of Brazil pop ideal for beach parties and shows due to its upbeat music and lyrics) while eating great seafood. |
if you like to dine while listening to a great show of bossa nova or jazz in a refined ambient then your place to go is the French Quartier club, located in the beachfront Jardim dos Namorados beautiful park that offers many leisure options too. |
Olodum (taking its name from the Yoruba God Olodumaré) is an internationally acclaimed afro-brazilian cultural group that in the 1980’s created samba-reggae, a mix of the traditional brazilian samba beat with merengue, salsa, and reggae rhythms. each sunday evening they perform a memorable drum and percussion free show at Largo do Pelourinho that celebrates the preservation of black culture and identity in the New World. |
Salvador’s most historic area also hosts the evocative Balé Folclórico da Bahia show that retraces the fascinating Bahia history through music, dances, rhythms and rituals, from capoeira to candomblé. |
but Bahia’s truest music is undoubtedly the one made with the berimbau (a single-string musical bow percussion instrument) to accompany the mystic capoeira, that it’s not just a fight disguised into a dance but a real lifestyle and one of the best ways for baianos to express themselves as it represents their history and culture better than anything else, so if you want to attend a real capoeira class you can check Mestre Bimba’s students sing, dance and fight in Pelourinho every tuesday and thursday at 7 PM. |
| Salvador’s Club Scene |
Baianos really like how to party therefore we have selected the best clubs in town where Salvador’s elite likes to hang out and if you are a single looking for fun you’ll never end up alone: |
one of Brazil’s best clubs given its great music, decor and service is the always very animated Bahia Café upscale club, located in Largo dos Aflitos and with a balcony that offers a full view of the Bahia de Todos os Santos bay. while instead just in front of the Farol da Barra there is Lotus, branch of the famous NYC dance club and one of the favourite nightlife spots by Bahia’s youth, where you can always meet beautiful people. |
Satelite Music House on Patamares beach is an Ibiza style club that has quickly turned into one of the favourite places by the local gorgeous singles on the hunt, attracting many tourists too thanks to renowned internationally famed DJs playing the latest trendiest electronic vibes. |
the Jardim dos Namorados park hosts one of the best “in” clubs in town, the Fashion Club, that with two floors, a DJ stage offering a great selection of music, a large dancefloor and big sofas on the sides always attracts the “right” young baianos. the more alternative crowds instead hangs around in the downtown bairro of Comércio at Zauber Multi Cultura, a London style squat party-like club that mixes tribal, progressive and psytrance music with visual arts. |
| Salvador’s Adult Nightlife Scene |
Salvador doesn’t have such a big nightlife that can be compared to Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo but still there are various nightclubs for all budgets where you can always have a great time, so if you are a single looking for fun these are the best adult clubs to go (forbidden admission to under 18): |
the newest top adult nightlife option in town is the Bangkok SPA, a Rio’s termas-like club located on the Itapoã beach, where dozens first-class gorgeous babes will entertain you anyway you like (…) and that also offers other amenities that you won’t find anywhere else in Brazil such as gardens, a big swimming pool and even a gym! definitely the best place where to spend your wildest nights out while in Salvador! |
the Relex Bar Night is another new adult entertainment complex that can be also compated to Rio de Janeiro’s top termas, and is situated in the bairro of Pituaçú. there many model-like girls will turn all your wild dreams come true ... highly recomnended! |
one of the city’s best nightclubs is the Boite VIP Club that is located in Boca do Rio just in front of the recently closed Aeroclube Plaza show (a great open air entertainment complex that also featured various great sex options such as the Café Cancun and Rock In Rio). the place is always filled up with very hot gatas free for all … |
other nearby great boites are Tchê Night Club located in Amaralinha, and Eros and Free Night, both situated in Pituba beach, and where you can always enjoy great adult live shows and be entertained by top class girls anyway you like … |
and of course we can’t leave out the most popular adult option in Salvador, the famous restaurant & show house Santissima Bahia (formerly named Casquinha de Siri), which is located on Coqueiros beach in Piatã and where you can have an exciting night (especially on monday) thanks to the many hot girls who are always looking for strangers to have fun with … |
| Salvador’s Museums |
Being Salvador the cradle of brazilian culture this means that the city offers various musems to visit, we suggest these ones: |
the City Museum located in the Largo do Pelourinho shows a bit of everything Salvador is famous for: music, history, culture, colonization, slavery, etc. if you can visit just one museum then this is that one. next door the Jorge Amado Home Museum hosts the world´s biggest collection about the most important brazilian writer of all time. |
in the Afro-Brazilian Museum of Bahia of Pelourinho you can discover the african heritage of Brazil brought by the slaves during the colonial period thanks to the world’s largest collection of slave culture. the city’s postcard Farol da Barra hosts the Naval Museum, while instead the Solar do Unhão houses the very interesting Modern Art Museum. |
last but not least on the northern Litoral near the beautiful Abaeté Lagoon, the Bahia Music House is a learning experience about the leading role of Bahia in the development of the country’s most popular sounds as baian music always gave to Brazil its biggest artists. |
| Salvador Fairs & Markets |
If you are looking for that typical souvenir to bring back home Salvador has various traditional fairs and markets, we suggest you the following: |
located in the Lower Town just in front of the Port the Mercado Modelo is the former customs that nowadays has been turned into the city’s biggest centre of local craftsmanships and souvenirs, and is worth to be visited also for historical reasons because in the basement under sea level were held the slaves brought from Africa before they were sold. the place is also equipped with a fine restaurant upstairs that offers a great view of Bahia de Todos os Santos bay and is always animated by capoeria fighters giving a show in the entrance. |
if the Mercado Modelo is the most popular souvenir market in town instead the São Joaquim Fair is an off the beaten track street market also located in the Lower Town closer to the Nosso Senhor do Bomfim church, and where you can buy typical food, souvenirs and local craftsmanship products at very cheap prices. a great place to try different food you probably wouldn’t eat anywhere else. |
| Salvador’s Extra |
If you are looking for that unforgettable experience that will last a lifetime among your fondest memories then one of the highlights of your Salvador holiday can be attending a ceremony of candomblé, the baian religion imported by the first african slaves whose cult of the Orixás was originally banned by the portuguese rulers to be later accepted when it included some elements of christianity, associating each Orixá with a christian saint. these rituals are performed in terreiros (how are called the places of worship, there are about two thousand terreiros in Salvador, which means five for each catholic church, the proof how much this cult is so deeply radicated in the Bahia society) and the code of conduct requires that those attending one of these ceremonies don’t wear shorts or take pics, videos or record what they see and if possible, dress in white as a sign of respect. |
the rituals typically center on some of the whorsippers entering in a trance and each one being possessed by an Orixá (these ceremonies are restricted to the public from Ash Wednesday to Easter and takes place only during local festivities, and usually in the poorer areas of Salvador where it is not wise to go alone – ask us for schedule and quotes and we will be glad to take care of everything including your personal security) |
| Salvador Out of Town Tours |
Bahia de Todos os Santos (which is the bay of Salvador that gives the name to the state of Bahia) is surrounded by many wonderful places, and the best ones are: |
the Itaparica island located in front of Salvador can be reached by boat with a tour that includes the nearby smaller Frades island , site of many fascinating stories. on Itaparica you can visit the Historical Centre with the churches of São Lourenço and Santíssimo Sacramento, the São Lourenço Fort, the Solar de Rey (a former whale meat factory that got its name because in the XIX Century first hosted João VI, and later his son Pedro I and grandson Pedro II), the Fonte da Bica (believed to be a fountain of youth because of its medicine water) and the Centro Artesanal where you can buy fine local craftsmanships and souvenirs. on your way back to mainland you can also visit the São Marcelo Fort, one of the most important of the ancient system of fortifications of Salvador. |
the beautiful small and quiet village of Praia do Forte is the pearl of the northern Litoral, located about 90 km/56 miles north of Salvador and is also known as the brazilian Polinesia. after arrival you can spend the morning on the Papa Gente beach which is charaterized by its crystal clear sea and natural pools. 13 km/8 miles away from the village you can find the paradise on earth of Imbassai beach, taking its name from the Imbassai river (which means walking water in the Tupi indio language) that runs through the Atlantic Forest to the ocean. there you can choose to bath in the river, or in the sea, or just sit on the river bank with your feet in the cold water and enjoying the amazing nature’s scenario that surrounds you. |
at lunch time you can choose among the many fine restaurants located on the centre of Praia do Forte and later have a look at the animated barzinhos and souvenir shops all worth to be visited. |
one of the things this paradise destination is famous for is the interesting Tamar Project, created to save the sea turtles (that because of that have now turned into the village’s symbol) and where you can learn about the many esotic species of turtles, fishes and sharks too living in the Bahia ocean. other great activities that you can do in Praia do Forte are a dune buggy tour through the white dunes of the Jauara Lagoon, scuba diving, horse-back riding, a trek tour of the Atlantic Forest, visiting the Garcia d’Avila Castle (the only medieval-style building of the Americas that belonged until one century ago to the world’s biggest landowner and wealthiest brazilian family, owner of about 10% of the country’s territory), and even humpback whale watching (which comes to Praia do Forte during the love season from july to november) |
as a contrast to the quiet and peaceful Praia do Forte, Morro de São Paulo is a get-away village in the paradise island of Tinhare, located 272 km/169 miles south of Salvador, which turns into a party town during the summer. its crystal clear waters and natural pools are ideal for scuba diving, and each of the beaches can suit for everybody’s needs, from relax to horse-back riding to surfing to parties. once there you can go even further and visit the quieter and wild Boipeba island, a virgin paradise that will turn everybody into a new Robinson Crusoe. other cool things to do are taking a healthy pink mud bath, venturing into the jungle to the Fonte do Ceu waterfall (it means Sky Font), visiting the ruins of the Tapirandu Fort, enjoy a great view of the insland from the Farol (lighthouse) or jump down to the beach with Brazil’s tallest air cable. and when the sun goes down nightlife is very frenetic thanks to animated places such as the Jamaica Bar, the 89, Toca do Morcego and the Luau parties at beach 2. |
