Angra dos Reis at a glance |
located 150 km/93 miles west from Rio de Janeiro Angra dos Reis means “Bay of the Kings” and its name derives from the fact that it was first reached by the portuguese colonizers on january 6, 1502, the day when Catholics celebrate Epiphany, the Day of the Three Kings. the place makes justice to its name as even kings would fell under the spell of the beautiness of Angra, an enchanting village famous for its magnificent crystal-clear waters, dozens of beaches and 365 amazing tropical islands which would take exactly one year to be visited and that are the favourite shelter of the rich and famous brazilians, from world famous plastic surgeon Ivo Pitanguy who owns an island, to Ronaldo. |
Angra dos Reis is a popular place for many to usher New Year, a traditional event of New Year’s day in town is a maritime parade of brightly decorated boats. the city has many hills from the top of which can be seen the two other main economic activities of the region besides tourism: the piers for construction and repair of large vessels, and the nuclear plants Angra I and Angra II (the only ones in Brazil, Angra III is under construction). |
Angra dos Reis is filled by so many breathtaking places: its largest island is Ilha Grande (the Big Island), a protected area containing one of the richest ecosystems in the world because here is preserved a piece of the Mata Atlantica, the Atlantic Forest that at the beginning of the portuguese colonization covered the whole brazilian coastline. the second largest island is Gipóia, renowned for its magnificent beaches and its inviting snorkeling spots. the Botinas gemini islands are one of the most famous postcard of Angra, and there you can also have a fine lunch in a unforgettable landscape at the Kontiki restaurant. |
on Jurubaíba beach (also known as Dentist beach) floating bars serve snacks and drinks to the boats that crow the area. sheltered by hills, a rocky shoreline and a dense native vegetation, Juruba beach is more peaceful and secluded, as it can only be reached by canoe. instead East beach is wilder and with warmer water. North beach is small, with fine white sand, while instead Sururu beach is almost deserted, with strong waves that crash against the reefs. |
Angra’s calm, crystal clear waters, its good visibility for most of the year and an average temperature of 23 C (74 F), makes it ideal for diving and snorkeling. the waters off the rocky shores of Brandão, Josefa, Redonda and Papagaio islands are recommended for sponges, coral and colorful fish. the sea bed is similar off Laje Zatim and the islands of Imboassica, Queimada Grande and Queimada Pequena, while the waters off the Botinas and dos Porcos islands are so rich in fish and so crystal clear that enormous schools of fish can be seen even from the boat. |
Angra dos Reis waters holds some wrecks that makes for great diving sites, like the panamanian freighter Pinguino which sank in the Sitio Forte island in 1967 and lays at a depth of 15 to 20 meters (50 to 60 feet), or the brazilian vessel California, that sank in 1866 in the Araçatiba inlet near Vermelha beach on Ilha Grande. off one of the bay’s headlands is located the wreck of the Bezerra de Menezes, a steam driven freighter that sank in 1860, while instead in Laje Matariz there is a helicopter 7 meters (22 feet) down, and the water is so transparent that on clear days even snorkelers can make it out. |
