Arraial do Cabo at a glance |
located 158 km/98 miles northeast of Rio, Arraial do Cabo is along with Búzios and Cabo Frio one of the highlights of the Região dos Lagos (the Lagoons Region). surrounded by hills and resembling a fishing village, Arraial do Cabo has white dunes, sandbanks, lagoons, unspoiled beaches and beautiful headlands. but what sets Arraial apart is that the town have some of the most beautiful brazilian beaches with incredibly greenish blue water so transparent it makes you think that you are in Fernando de Noronha. no wonder this place is also known as the scuba diving capital of Brazil and it’s also ideal for surf. once there you can take a boat trip leaving from the harbour that will take you to wonderful and unspoiled beaches. leaving in the morning and during the high season in the afternoon too, these boat trips are unforgettable, especially the one to the Gruta Azul which stops at the Pontal do Atalaia. |
the island of Cabo Frio (not to be confounded with the other carioca village with the same name) is surrounded by waters with good visibitily and very rich in species of fishes and corals because the same streams that come from Antarctica and cool down the water brings nutrients which help marine life strive. besides diving, visitors can also go to the old lighthouse (2 hour walking) and to the Gruta Azul (Blue Grotto), a cavern with walls 15 meters (49 feet) high that turns shades of blue when the sunlight comes in (access to the grotto is only by boat and during low tide). from the high headland Pontal do Atalaia you can enjoy a wonderful coastal sunset. |
the path to the beautiful Forno beach begins right by the entrance to the harbour, it’s a 20 minute walk before you reach the beach, or if you prefer, you can go there by boat too. instead Grande beach, on the side of Arraial facing the Atlantic Ocean, is not good for swimming as the waves there are quite strong. but its whiter than white sands are mesmerizing, and you can have a really good time indulging in the late afternoon drinking a caipirinha while sitting in one of the many bars and kiosks, and watching the surfers riding the waves. for the more energetic travellers there is scuba diving and a number of trails to explore, such as the one that leads to the old lighthouse. |
other great beaches are: |
Ponta da Jararaca where visitors can find abundant marine life encrusting great blocks of rocks. the Teixeirnha, a wrecking ship that sank in 1923 can be seen scattered into chunks at various depths. Pigs island is not for the inexperienced divers as depths can reach up to 40 meters (130 feet) close to the rocks. the Camarinha Grotto too is for just expert divers and only when the sea is calm and the visibility is good. Saco dos Cordeiros (Lambs Bag) offers shallow diving, from 6 to 10 meters (20 to 33 feet) in quiet waters, green sponges, sea horses and pink corals. Ponta Leste beach is exceptionally rich in marine life with rays, turtles, barracuda, yellowtail and mackerel, just to name a few. |
back in the primordes of brazilian history Arraial was covered with Pau Brasil (Brazil Wood), a kind of three used to die fabrics. this wood was the first resource to be traded from the new country to Europe so also attracted foreigner smugglers, notably dutch and French pirates. therefore many shipwrecks remain from those times and it is estimated that there are 88 wrecks in the area that are a big attraction for divers. for example the brazilian navy warship Dona Paula sinked in 1827 in an area that now bears its name while pursuing an argentinean corsair, and offers a dive of between 5 and 15 meters (16 and 50 feet) |
