Búzios at a glance

the cutest destination on the carioca coastline is Búzios (full name Armação dos Búzios), a small former fishermen’s village taking its name from the small sea shells that abounds along the brazilian coast. located in a natural paradise 192 km/119 miles northeast from Rio de Janeiro Búzios is an idyllic 8 km/5 miles peninsula surrounded by clear green waters. it is also a global village where people from all over the world meet. this is also due to the fact that many visitors fall in love with the place and decide to stay forever and infact many businesses are run by foreigners.

until the 1950s Búzios was a secluded carioca beach retreat that was extremely difficult to reach, but everything changed when in 1964 french superstar actress Brigitte Bardott discovered it and helped transform Búzios into one of the favourite places by the high society jet set and a fashionable international tourist destination. today Búzios has first class infrastructure, with comfortable accomodation, cozy bars, sophisticated restaurants and elegant stores.

the heart of Búzios is Rua das Pedras (Street of Stones), a 400 meter/quarter mile pictoresque avenue that bisects the town, named after its rough-cut paving stones, which act as a deterrent to drivers and an encouragement to pedestrians. here Brazil mixes with the world’s cultures thanks to the international imprinting of the town and you will enjoy yourself among many famous designer boutiques, sophisticated restaurants and trendy night clubs sharing their space with charming souvenir stores, cool bars and ice cream parlors, typical creperies and many street artists.

a quieter street during the day, Rua das Pedras gets animated at sunset, and you can choose between many options that fits all tastes:

charming Pátio Havana is a five different ambient and sophisticated show house where after having had a fine dinner with the best of international cousine in the cuban-themed patio you can either listen to live music and dance samba and salsa (the place also hosts in july the renowned BúziosJazz & Blues Festival),  or if you prefer you can play pool, taste all blends of whisky or even enjoy a great cuban cigar while admiring a great ocean view.

if instead you prefer a more casual ambient then the mexican food bar Guapo Loco is your place being the favourite place for the young people to hang out in the evening and decide how to conclude the night that often leads to the trendiest dance club Privilège, frequented by the most beautiful people in town (including celebrities and models) and often animated by some of the best international DJs.

the town has four yacht clubs and annually hosts more than a dozen events and competitions, such as the Búzios Sailing Week. a must while in town is sailing off for a spectacular boat tour of the islands Feia, Branca and Rasa and many of the beautiful 23 beaches of the peninsula, with cocktail, fruits and snacks served on board plus a pagode show. Búzios has beaches for every taste: with or without waves, deep or shallow, cold or mild, crowded or deserted:

praia dos Ossos (beach of Bones) is also one of the city’s best walking itineraries as it is characterized by many life-size statues. many sailing and windsurfing competitions take place here, and you can also take a tour aboard a glass-bottomed boat to observe marine life, or visit the historic Igreja de Sant’Ana church, buit in 1740. Azeda and Azedinha beaches can be accessed only by walking from Praia dos Ossos. praia do Canto and praia da Armação are dotted with colonial houses and fishing boats and are unfit for bathing. in Armação beach there is a life-size statue of Brigitte Bardot that gives the name to the Orla Bardot, one of the city’s favourite postcards, while instead Brava and Manguinhos beaches are excellent for surfing because of their huge waves. from Manguinhos can be seen Ilha Feia (the Ugly island) about 10 km/6 miles into the sea, which is a perfect place for scuba diving.

if your thing are deserted quiet beaches you can go to either praia dos Amores (Lovers beach), good for swimming and very popular among nudists because it is untouched, has calm waters, and can only be accessed by sea or by scrambling along the rocky coastline, or to praia das Virgens (beach of the Virgins), also a deserted beach that can be reached only by sea from praia dos Amores, but only when there is low tide. another private nudism beach is Olho de Boi (Ox Eye) that can only be accessed walking from Brava beach, while instead praia da Ferradura (Horse Shoe beach) is a placid bay with kiosks and beach houses, ideal for families. the semi-deserted João Fernandinho beach has many natural pools formed by the water trapped by the rocks.

if instead you like crowded and vibrant beaches then you can choose between João Fernandes beach, characterized by many rocky outctrops and that has many kiosks serving lobster and delicious local fish, or the trendiest Geribá beach, very popular amongst youngsters and where are located many bars and restaurants.
