located 316 km/196 miles northeast of Rio, Cabo Fio is the biggest and most developed town in the Região dos Lagos (Lakes Region). do not confuse the city of Cabo Frio with nearby city Arraial do Cabo (14 km/8.6 miles distant), nor with the Ilha de Cabo Frio (Island of Cabo Frio, reachable through Arraial). its name means "Cold Cape" and comes from the low temperature of the sea water because there is a submarine stream coming from South Pole which emerges near the coast. plus there is also a constant wind blowing from northeast, which has sculpted fine white sand into dunes. |

the most famous and crowded beach of Cabo Frio is Forte beach, with its São Mateus fort from which you can have a panoramic view of the town and that also hosts frequently music shows. praia do Foguete (Rocket beach) with its powerful high waves is ideal for surfing and fishing. another popular beach for surfers because of its strong waves is the nearby praia Brava (Wild beach). from there you can keep walking until you reach Peró beach, that has spectacular dunes and many kiosks where you can relax and hang on with the beautiful local singles. |
