Ilha Grande at a glance |
Ilha Grande (Big Island) is the second largest brazilian island taking a back step only to Fernando de Noronha and is part of the 365 islands that form the region of Angra dos Reis, which is located 150 km/93 miles west from Rio de Janeiro. Ilha Grande is about one and a half hours by boat from Angra and has more than one hundred beaches that suits all tastes. just to name some: Abraão beach, where the boats arrive, praia Preta (Black beach) from the color of its dark monazitic sand, where there are also the ruins of the old Penitenciary of Ilha Grande, praia Dois Rios (Two Rivers beach) hosting another old penitentiary that was recently closed in 1994, Lopes Mendes beach, with its natural pools and strong waves ideal for surfing and Bananal beach, with its typical yellow sand. |
Ilha Grande is a protected area containing one of the richest ecosystems in the world because here is preserved a piece of the Mata Atlantica, the Atlantic Forest that at the beginning of the portuguese colonization covered the whole brazilian coastline. that’s why to help with nature preservation cars are forbidden with distant hotels providing to tourists their own transportation. |
nearly all restaurants, shops and travel agencies that offer excursions are concentrated in the small Vila do Abraão village, where arriving boats make landfall. the best hotels however are scattered elsewhere around the island and a bit more difficult to reach. |
Ilha Grande is a trekking paradise with 16 beaten trails cutting across the island. many trails start at Vila do Abraão and combine stretches of beach and forest. some popular trekkings are to Dois Rios beach (2 hours each way), Cachadaço beach (4 hours) and Cachoeira da Feiticeira (Witch Waterfall - 2 hours). the longest trail is a combination of shorter ones, rings the entire island (with campings along the way) and takes a week to complete. the best times of the year for trekking are from may to july and from october to november, when temperatures are mild and rainfall is low. although trails are well signalled it is wisely to go with an expert guide in the long walks. |
another option to explore the island is to take boat tours, the most popular is to Freguesia de Santana, that offers a marvelous view of the Angra coast. once there you can visit the Igreja de Santana church in Freguesia, built in 1796 and considered the area’s most important historic heritage. in addition to the beaches, the excursion will take you to the small snorkel heaven of Lagoa Azul (the Blue Lagoon), enclosed by tiny islets and full of brightly colored tropical fishes. |
other interesting boat trips also takes to Saco do Céu and Japriz, where the sea is calm and ideal for jet skiing in an area close to the mangrove swamps, and to Las Palmas beach, with a one hour hike to Lopes Mendes beach and a stop at Morcego island and Abraãozinho. |
