Niterói at a glance

Niterói is located on the other side of the Bay of Rio de Janeiro and can be considered the Rio's New Jersey because it’s quieter and has a small-town feeling. many cariocas live in Niterói and commute to the Marvellous City to work as the town is connected to the capital city by a 24 hour boats service leaving from the Ferry Terminal to Praça XV (the trip last 12 minutes) and by vans leaving anytime through the famous bridge long 8.69 miles/14 km (you can take a van in various key points of the town that will take you in 20 minutes in front of Uruguaiana metro station in downtown Rio). both ways to reach Niterói are very cheap.

the city main attraction is the celeb MAC, the Contemporary Art Museum which always hosts interesting collections and that is already a piece of art itself with its futuristic spacecraft-shaped building since it was designed by the world’s famous innovative brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. thanks to Niemeyer’s ingeniousity, this Museum is one of the few where the eyes of visitors are drawn away from the exhibits to the windows; the view of the Guanabara bay is spectacular as the panoramic window encircing the ring-shaped building reveals a new view at every step, including a uniuqe view of the Sugar Loaf.

opened in 1996, the MAC is part of the Niemeyer Route, a project still under construction called this way because it will include all buildings designed by the celeb architect, such as the two Catholic and Baptist Cathedrals, the Memory Centre, the Cinema Museum and the already operating Charitas Boat Terminal. after the complex will be completed only Brasília will have more buildings designed by Niemeyer.

another great places worth be visited is the City Park, located on a hill that dominates Niterói and where you can relax and also enjoy a great view of the Guanabara Bay, or if you prefer you can have a city tour with stops at the statue of the Indio Araribóia (founder of Niterói), the Fortaleza de Santa Cruz fort and the Boa Viagem island located in front of the MAC.

Niterói has many great beaches where you can have a great time: Icaraí beach concentrates the best restaurants, such as branches of Rio’s famous Porcão and Marius, while instead São Francisco beach hosts the most important nightlife activity. our favourite anyway is the very quiet Forte Rio Branco beach, one of Rio’s best kept secrets as it is basically ignored by tourists, where you can relax and enjoy a cool day in the sun.
