Paraty at a glance |
Paraty is a little paradise in colonial style on the coast located 234 km/145 miles west from Rio that still mantains its originality towards all other brazilian cities as it is one of the country’s most charming sites and a gateway to the past. founded in the mid 16th century and strategically located on the path between Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, Paraty was on the route of the gold exportations, and later of coffee trade; and despite its strategic importance eventually ceased when Brazil started to turn into a industrial country its rich colonial archicteture was preserved, and the town was declared a World Heritage site in 1966. |
the enchanting Historical Center (where only walking is allowed) exhibits one of the most harmonic architectonic collections in the country and it’s charatherized by its streets below sea level that are still paved with the original and irregular rough cobblestones and shaped in channels to drain the water and allow the sea to enter and wash the streets during high tide. the Casa da Cultura (Culture House) occupies a magnificent mansion built in 1754 and holds a permanent exhibition on local history and culture, besides hosting periodic events. on the same street you can find the Teatro Espaço, home of the renowned Puppet Theater. |
like in other colonial cities, churches are an attraction in Paraty: Santa Rita Chapel is the oldest church in town, dating from 1722, and houses the Museum of Sacred Art. the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito (Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict) was built and used by african slaves and its decoration is very simple, except for the gold leaf on the altars, that was added in the early 20th century. built in 1800 in typical 18th century style, the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores (Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows) also known as Capelinha (Small Chapel) was instead used by the aristocracy during the imperial years. the construction of the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (First Church of Our Lady of the Remedies) began in 1787 and took nearly 100 years to complete because of the lack of money. |
the colonial center abounds with artistic life: a daily fair in Praça da Matriz displays many arts and crafts, as well as music and puppet shows, and on nearly every corner of Paraty there is someone playing music, making arts or performing some kind of show. an intensive cultural program fills the calendar featuring events of gastronomic, musical, cultural and folkloric nature, including the beautiful Festa do Divino (Feast of Divine), a tradition from Azores in the 18th century that consists of ten days of typical dances and pilgrimages which happen fourty days after Easter. other places worth be visited are Praça da Bandeira square and the postcard-like Bay. |
the mountains of Serra da Bocaina National Forest surround Paraty, and dozens of small islands dot its bay. numerous beautiful beaches (some nearly desert) and some snorkeling spots attract beach goers. boats and trawlers are available for hire with various routes stopping at three of four beaches to allow diving, amidst spectacular scenery, off Algodão and Sapeca islands. because of the location at the foot of the mountains, the city is starting point for trekking tours in the highlands with visits to several beautiful waterfalls. |
